I came to KiaKaha Crossfit gym a mere 7 days after Hala and Jamie opened the doors. My reason for turning up was a work colleague Rachael wanted to check it out but was a little apprehensive about going on her own. We went, we chatted, and we arranged to do an introductory session. I thought I was reasonably fit, but the intro session albeit short in length, took my breath away – literally. Loved it though, as this was different to what I normally did at the gym. I liked the idea of relatively short sessions and the philosophy of high intensity. I initially started out thinking I’d go two days a week, as I still had my gym workouts and running. This lunch-time pursuit would be in addition to that and to help encourage my colleague to keep working to achieving her goals. Well five months later I go more often and would say – I’m addicted! Rachael doesn’t need my encouragement – she too is addicted! The improvement in my body composition and my ability to do more and do it better has been fantastic, maybe even amazing; I still have plenty of work to do on my ‘lemons’ and ‘goats’ though (Crossfit speak for weaknesses!). I love too that there is a focus on ‘great technique’ first and foremost as that is the way to get improvements. Poor form only hinders and can cause injury if not remedied. The biggest buzz ever comes when you do a personal best at one of the workouts or manage to complete a Rxd (prescribed) workout. You feel on top of the world for the rest of the day. Each of us has different strengths and weaknesses and it is these differences that mean everyone excels on one day or another.
I am now following the Crossfit methodology and nutrition path to prepare for the Rotorua Marathon end of April 2011. Bring it on!
Jamie and Hala as the owners and coaches offer amazing energy, encouragement and enthusiasm to everyone that walks through their doors. I admire and respect them immensely for their dedication, boundless energy and the thought and preparation they put into their business to make it what it is for everyone every day. Jamie’s coaching style is one that inspires and motivates and he is full of respect for those that give it 100%. Hala is newer to the coaching game, but over the last few months I have seen her find her feet and flourish as a coach and quiet motivator to push, cajole and make you ‘just do it’. Hala and Jamie are a great combination and their complementary styles will be one of the reasons that this particular Crossfit box will reach great heights in the future.
From my limited experience of this type of training I think there is a special type of person that enjoys Crossfit… but there is certainly no age, size or gender limitations to finding out if you are that person.
For those that are looking and wondering whether this fitness concept is worth checking out – I say IT IS A MUST… if you want to turn your body around, and potentially your life, then KiaKaha Crossfit is the place to be.

“Thank you to all the crew at Kia Kaha Crossfit, especially Coach J, whom made my recent visit to the gym a memorable one. The high level of instruction was outstanding, and the overall set-up for a gym that has been opened only a few months was very impressive. The camaraderie amongst everyone there was great & I was made to feel very welcome. Keep smashing those WOD’s everyone – very inspirational indeed.”

Jamie / Hala,
I wanted to send a note to Thank You for KKCF. My work has me on the road a ton and as a result I have visited a number of Crossfit boxes in the region. There are things I like about each one I have gone to, but Kia Kaha CrossFit is in my opinion the BEST!
Every gym can get a ton out of me with the WOD.
However, I can honestly say I have gained more knowledge, insight and skill during my few visits to Kia Kaha than at any other gym, period.
You have something really special going on there and I hope everyone who attends, or is considering attending, knows what an awesome place they have in Auckland’s Kia Kaha Crossfit.
Looking forward to seeing you next time I am in town.
Sincerely,
E

For me, Crossfit changed my life. Last year, I was going through a pretty tough time. Having self esteem issue and uncertainties with my job. I started training with Crossfit and it all changed. I think the biggest thing that changed for me was my attitude. Crossfit change my attitude towards life, work, everything. It got me out of my slump and made me want to be better at everything I did. So I think Crossfit didn’t change my life, I think it saved my life. And it with coaches, mentors and friends like Jaime and Hala that make it happen. You guys rock!!! And I’m so happy to part of your Crossfit family.
